Abstract

This study examines the influence of regular sports practice on the learning capacity and academic performance of aspiring teachers during their preparation for competitive examinations. Eighty-five students from a teacher training academy in Spain participated, aged between 23 and 35 years (mean = 29 years). The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and cognitive tests such as the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test and the Symbol Digit Modalities Test were used to assess physical activity and cognitive functions, respectively. Results showed that participants who regularly engaged in sports obtained significantly higher scores in learning capacity and academic performance compared to those who did not engage in physical activity. A positive correlation was found between the level of physical activity and the evaluated cognitive functions. These findings suggest that sports practice can be a determining factor in improving academic performance and cognitive development of aspiring teachers. It is recommended to integrate physical activity programs into teacher training to enhance learning and well-being of future educators.
